It's Great to be Back in Pembroke! - September 5, 2016
Hello everyone!

After a short time back in Norway to prepare for work as a choir conductor and other musical activities, another edition of the 2016 Pembroke Fiddle and Step Dance Contest is now complete. As I write this update before flying back to Norway to rejoin my family, I was out at Riverside Park for concerts, jam sessions and fellowship, 150 kms northwest of Ottawa, Ontario during the Labour Day Weekend.

Music News from Canada - August 22, 2016

a_parking_spot_or_a_personal_toilet_2.jpgHello everyone! When I was playing at the 19th annual John Arcand Fiddle Fest outside Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from August 11th-14th, I was given my own personal parking spot by the organizers so I could be close to the stage to load and unload my instruments. But what I did not expect was that I would be close to the portable toilets as well. On my own Facebook page, I asked the question to everyone who read my post; a personal parking spot? Or a personal toilet? The answers I got were certainly varied and humerous!

Since my last article, I have been able to complete some other music work as well perform with others back home in Canada. Here is the latest music news.

Memories of Saskatoon’s La Ribambelle 1986-2014
I remember my first performance with La Ribambelle on January 21, 1990 with the Saskatoon Silver Strings Fiddle Club for their folk music production of Cinderella at Saskatoon’s 25th Street Theatre. It was a time when founder and artistic director Jean Duppereault reached out to the Saskatoon fiddle community to provide backup musicians for the troupe’s annual show.

The 2014 Canadian Grand Masters – 25th Anniversary Edition

Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec witnessed the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship take place during the weekend of August 22-23, 2014. Many memories of past Canadian national fiddle championships flooded through my mind as I landed in Ottawa, as this was the 19th time in the contest’s history that I would be one of the house accompanists. But my role did not stop there. I also served as piano accompanist for the 25th anniversary gala concert that was held at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, just across the river from Ottawa, Ontario.

School, Fiddle and Choirs - Highs and Lows in Life and Music

Mid-May to mid-June 2014 has been a time of highs and lows for me and my family. After my father's passing on May 12, 2014, this meant travel back to Canada to help plan my father's funeral. Because of this, I had to withdraw from playing at Norway's 200th annual celebration of the founding of the Norwegian consitution which happens every May 17th; specifically those events both in the Village of Valestrand, Norway and with a Lutheran Church mission in the neighbouring hamlet of Hjellvik. I played a wonderful album release party that took place with Calvin Vollrath in Alberta, I had choir rehearsals for a Norwegian national choir competition, and my temporary contract as a school music teacher in Bergen was finished. Lots of things have happened over these four weeks.

Howard Leroy Bruner: My Dad, My Tribute
It is with deep sadness that our family announces the death of my father, Howard Leroy Bruner (November 1, 1932 - May 12, 2014, age 81) which happened at the Shellbrook Hospital in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, Canada. He passed away due to prostate and lung cancer. But the good news for us is that he is not suffering anymore and we know with certainty that he is in a better place. There are many pleasant memories I have of my father outside of music, but I will focus on my musical memories of him in this article.

The 2013 Canadian Grand Masters - A Time for All to Remember

Hi everyone!

For those of you who were unable to attend the 24th annual Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, it was a magical experience for me as one of the two house accompanists for our national fiddle championship. For those who organized and participated in this event, the end result was truly special as it went beyond expectations in a big way. This was the first time that Canada’s national fiddle championship was held outside the Ottawa, Ontario region, and after the results of this special weekend that took place August 23rd-25th, it will go down as one of the most memorable times in the history of Canada’s national fiddle championship. The atmosphere was electric, the audience was energetic, and the memories will live on for many years to come.
